A Little About Vegetariant & Vegetarian Diets

Vegetariant is a variant vegetarian cooking site that caters to vegetarians and pescatarians (that’s a seafood eating vegetarian). Whenever possible, we strive to put together recipes that cater to both vegetarians and non-vegetarians simultaneously.

So, what does that mean, variant vegetarian? Variant, as defined by dictionary.com means:

Adjective. tending to change or alter; exhibiting variety or diversity; varying: variant shades of color.

While we’re at it, let’s look at the term vegetarian, as defined by dictionary.com:

Noun. a person who does not eat or does not believe in eating meat, fish, fowl, or, in some cases, any food derived from animals, as eggs or cheese, but subsists on vegetables, fruits, nuts, grain, etc.’

What we eat is a very personal choice. And as you probably know, there are many types of vegetarian diets in the world. The above is a general definition and below are more specific types of vegetarian diets, including vegan, lacto-vegetarian, ovo-vegetarian, lacto-ovo vegetarian, pescatarian, pollotarian, and flexitarian. This is only meant to be a general reference. Diets, like many things, will vary from person to person.

A Little About Me & Variant Vegetarian Cooking

Personally, I’m a pescatarian. I stopped eating meat and poultry when I was 16 years old. I just couldn’t stomach it anymore. Literally. I do still enjoy seafood, so you will find a wide variety of seafood and vegetarian dishes on this site. My husband is an omnivore, although before he met me, he was more of a carnivore. Once he learned that there was much more to veggies than eating them steamed or drowned in cheese, he was sold! In fact, he had no idea that there were so many great options for cooking full meals without meat or poultry. When we cook, if it’s not seafood and he’s in the mood for some meat, then we split recipes so he can have meat and I can have veggies. You will find that some of the recipes on this site are done two ways, so you can easily duplicate our efforts for your family and friends.

Cooking for a variety of diets can be very challenging, but with a little help, we can help dispel the challenges and make it easier to do.
